David Allely, Managing Director, Allelys Group, United Kingdom
THE "WHO-WHERE-WHAT" CHALLENGE
David studied mechanical engineering after leaving school and then joined the family business, He first looked after Allely's international transport operations before developing the heavy transport business. In more recent times, he has concentrated on the larger projects working with GE, ABB, and Siemens, as well as the company's latest heavy crane venture.
Tell us about Allelys. Who owns the company?
The Company is owned by my 2 brothers (Peter and Robert) and myself.
Where are your offices located?
We are located in Studley, Warwickshire, which is just to the southwest of Birmingham.
What is Allely's specialty and service range?
We offer general transport, heavy transport, jacking and skidding and factory installation services, general storage and heavy storage.
Do you offer services on international or rather domestic level?
Yes we will offer for international projects and transport, although we concentrate on UK and Ireland, but have worked in Europe, Scandinavia and the US before.
Tell us about projects that you have handled recently.
We have recently handled a gas turbine and generator transport operation for Siemens to a power plant at Spalding, arranging the vessel discharge and transport to site with a bridge jumping operation. We have also just completed the installation of the new GE Haliade X turbine into the Catapult test facility in the UK weighing some 750 te
What is your advantage against competition?
Our advantage is our range and quantity of equipment, but more importantly our knowledge and reputation. We operate the largest heavy trailer fleet in the UK with 150 modular axles, 4 girder bridge trailers from 200 to 500 te capacity, 5 off hydraulic lifting gantries up to 900 te, strand jacks, heavy skidding equipment and 120 lines of SPMT.
Our knowledge has been gained from 40 years moving heavy equipment in the UK with around 2000 heavy transports per year.
What made you join the industry?
It’s a family business, those that are in family businesses would understand when I say I had few choices!
What do you like the most about your business?
Every day has a different challenge, and solving these whether they are route issues or difficult lifting challenges is always satisfying, plus we get to go to some incredible places for our work and see so many different businesses, from museums to nuclear power plants.
